SCIENTOLOGY REGISTERED AS COMPANY

The Church of the New Faith Incorporated (Scientology) has been registered in W.A. as a foreign company.

The practice of scientology in W.A. was banned in 1968 under legislation introduced into State Parliament by the previous Government.

The Rev. Michael Graham, Australian president of the church, said in a Press release yesterday that the church was now registered in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and W.A.

"Now that the church is registered, the Scientology Act 1968 should be repealed very soon," he said.

The church was registered as a foreign company with the Companies Registration Office in Perth on October 17.

W.A. AGENT

The certificate of registration shows that the Church of the New Faith Incorporated was incorporated in South Australia. It lists the agent appointed in W.A. by the company as Joan Gertrude Kathleen Cornelius, of Mt. Henry Road, Manning.

The address of the registered office of the company is shown as 37 Cleaver Street, Perth.

The Minister for Health, Mr Davies, said last night that he had not seen the release.

He did not know the implications and could not comment at this stage.

He also said that Parliament would be asked to consider the position of scientology in W.A.

He would not say whether Parliament would be asked to repeal the Act banning the practice of scientology.

FINES

The Act, which imposes fines for teaching or carrying out a business of scientology, was passed by the State Parliament in 1968 after lengthy debates.

The Labor Opposition fought the passage of the Bill.

Last December, the Minister for Works, Mr Davies, told the Legislative Assembly that the Government would "in due course" consider repealing the Act.
